Wythenshawe Vets Over-35s are based in southern the city and compete in the Cheshire Vets Division Top Tier.

Well-Known Names and Global Players

Ireland started playing for the team during pre-season this season through good friend and current Wythenshawe player Blake Norton, and the ex- Republic of Ireland player then invited other former professionals, who all play in a midweek nine-a-side match, to join in.

Ex- Senegalese forward Oumar Niasse, who netted twelve goals in sixty-five top-flight matches for Everton and even now goes to their home games, also made his debut against Collegiate OB - who are based in Liverpool and use an Everton warm-up gear as their uniform.

"My mate Stephen said 'come and have a game, it's good fun'," commented the striker.

"After that he told me we were playing a team from the city and the surprise I had when I saw them sporting Blue shirts - I say this is wrong for me!

"When you still love football and you feel you can still do it, anywhere you can kick a ball, what are you going to choose?

"Those fans who come and see are happy and to give someone's day if they watch us playing there and to pose us queries - it's really about the joy of us having somewhere we can enjoy football, with organisation of course."

Such is the strength in depth at Wythenshawe, he had his debut at defender.

"That's a bit different but then, I love running and just go inside - I'm not defending that much," he said.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to continue running.

"That movement is what I'm after. It's good fun."

'Surreal Feeling

Along with Cisse's 6 goals on his first game, Stephen Ireland has scored eight in three games for Wythenshawe, while Boyd hit 5 on his debut match and Lescott, a defender by trade, notched a triple in one match up front.

The team are leading of the Top Tier with three victories from three and a GD of +19.

One opponent, 38, who plays on the flank for the opposition, faced former Latics full-back Maynor Figueroa on the weekend - and had to explain his young son who Emile Heskey was.

Figueroa has played at 2 World Cups for his country, in as well as featuring in over 200 Premier League matches.

"The news was spreading like a rumor they had these ex-Premier League stars," said the player.

"I think I was a bit awestruck facing Figueroa to be honest.

"Also Heskey got on and he's has over 60 English appearances.

"Our side held our own for a good 20 mins but then we had a man sent off and it was hard.

"We literally have not ceased chatting about it - I was calling my mother and sibling on the way home.

"The opponents were all dead sound, shaking our hands after the match - it was like playing a group of normal fellas.

"Now we can't wait for the second fixture."
